This talk will outline the epidemiology of rare lung diseases associated with respiratory failure, particularly interstital lung disease, genetic causes of bronchiectasis, children with pulmonary manifestations of systemic disease, and pulmonary vascular disorders. How these children present, how to differentiate rare pathologies from the usual respiratory maladies of childhood, and a discussion around imaging and further investigations, will hopefully be a guide to the role of the specialist respiratory paediatrician in identifying children with significant lung disease.
